The release of LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite seems strangely timed

Arriving with plenty of fanfare earlier today, the timing of the upcoming release of LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite does seem slightly strange.

The latest LEGO Ideas set may be arriving as soon as next month, but for some fans of the K-pop superstars that may already feel like a lifetime away. 21339 BTS Dynamite is a 749-piece build based around the South Korean band and their global smash-hit single and video, ‘Dynamite,’ that includes all seven members of the group as minifigures.

A fan submission from designers JBBrickFanatic and BangtanBricks, the LEGO Ideas model was originally announced to be arriving in early March, although LEGO.com now has the specific date listed as March 1, 2023. However, despite having been in the works for nearly a year, the timing of the upcoming release does still feel a little strange.

They may have clocked up billions of YouTube views with their music videos and sold millions of albums worldwide, but the K-pop phenomenon is currently on something of a temporary hiatus. Under South Korean laws, all able-bodied males must complete between 18 and 21 months of military service, usually by the age of 28. In December 2022, band member Jin was reported to have enlisted as an active duty soldier, with the rest of group expected to follow suit once they too come of age.

Whilst there have been no hints that this might mean a potential breakup of BTS any time soon, nearly two years out of the pop world could certainly affect the band’s profile and profits. Keeping the group visible via social media and licensed products would be one way of BTS remaining in the spotlight with their fans until their military careers are completed and the upcoming LEGO Ideas set is certainly one such piece of merchandise.

21339 BTS Dynamite is scheduled to launch on March 1, 2023 and will be available priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99. For more information on the latest LEGO Ideas set, be sure to check out our in-depth visual tour and gallery right here.
