LEGO Star Wars rumoured to revisit decades-old ships in 2023
After years of standard TIE Fighters, the LEGO Star Wars team is rumoured to be finally shaking things up for 2023 with two long-forgotten ships.
On the cards for next year – at least according to the rumour mill – are a pair of Imperial TIE vehicles we haven’t seen in LEGO bricks for up to two decades. The first of those is 75347 TIE Bomber, a ship last released in minifigure scale in 2003’s 4479 TIE Bomber, which is said to be launching in January for €64.99. The minifigure line-up is thought to consist of Darth Vader, a TIE Pilot, a GONK Droid and (confusingly) Rae Sloane.
While we’ve heard rumblings of that TIE Bomber redux for a while, the latest reports suggest it will be joined on shelves in 2023 by the first standard TIE Interceptor since 2006’s 6206 TIE Interceptor. Both that model and 4479 TIE Bomber arrived when the LEGO Group was still launching TIE Fighters with its retro black and blue colour scheme, before switching to the more accurate light grey with 2012’s 9492 TIE Fighter.
The newest Interceptor is currently rumoured to be part of a double-pack of starfighters for The Mandalorian Season 3, in 75348 Mandalorian Fang Fighter vs. TIE Interceptor. Coming in at 957 pieces for €99.99 in Europe, the biggest of two sets anchored to Mando’s third season – which debuts on Disney+ early next year – would also be the first set to give us two duelling ships in one box since 2016’s 75150 Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-wing Starfighter.
We’ve had something like a TIE Interceptor, of course, in 75240 Major Vonreg’s TIE Fighter. That 2019 set – based on Star Wars: Resistance – adopted the same wing shape of the TIE Interceptor with minor modifications, but was built in a striking red and black colour scheme. If The Mandalorian Season 3 brings the classic ship back to screens, we’re likely looking at a more traditional interpretation for the accompanying LEGO set.
If these rumours are true – and there’s every chance they’re not, until confirmed otherwise – they would also mean that by the middle of 2023, a total of three different TIE Fighters could be on shelves simultaneously. That’s because 75300 Imperial TIE Fighter is still available, and isn’t due to retire until the end of 2023 at the time of writing. Whether any new TIE variants would be to scale with that downsized ship also remains to be seen.

Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
