LEGO Star Wars May the 4th 2023 buyer’s guide

From double VIP points and multiple gifts-with-purchase to new and retiring LEGO sets, there’s a lot to consider this May the 4th – so here’s your guide to shopping on Star Wars Day in 2023.

There’s so much going on across May the 4th in 2023 that you might be having trouble figuring out which sets to prioritise to make the most of all the offers. There’s no shame in it: only a true master of the Force would be able to keep up with everything without a little help, and given we don’t see any of those around, this guide will have to do.

For those currently planning their purchases like a fine art, here’s a step-by-step breakdown of everything you need to consider…

New LEGO Star Wars sets

Already caught up on every LEGO Star Wars set on your wish list, or simply a sucker for new stuff? Us too, which is why we’ve already got our eyes on the full range of new LEGO Star Wars sets launching May 1. The full range now extends to seven sets, and there’s a little something for everyone: two minifigure-scale Return of the Jedi dioramas, two playsets inspired by The Mandalorian Season 3, a BrickHeadz five-pack, a new Ultimate Collector Series X-wing, and a detailed midi-scale display model.

Our top picks from that list are 75355 X-wing Starfighter, which will qualify for each and every gift-with-purchase across May the 4th (more on those below), and 75348 Mandalorian Fang Fighter vs. TIE Interceptor, which bundles together two brilliant ships at a fairly reasonable price. You’ll need to add something else to that to qualify for 40591 Death Star II, though.

Three different GWPs

Did we mention a Death Star? Yep: three different LEGO gifts-with-purchase will be available from May 1 to 7, headlined by 40591 Death Star II. Another Return of the Jedi 40th-anniversary set (complete with printed anniversary brick), the 289-piece model is a tabletop recreation of the Empire’s most fearsome battle station. It’s yours with all purchases over £130 / $150 / €150.

Also available in the same timeframe are 5007840 Return of the Jedi 40th Collectible and 30654 X-wing Starfighter, each with its own required spend. Check out the full breakdown below, and remember that these gifts stack – so spending enough for the coin will net you the polybag too, while reaching the Death Star will qualify for the lot.

2x VIP points – and 5x VIP points

The LEGO Group will be offering double VIP points across all LEGO Star Wars sets online and in-store for May the 4th this year, as well as 5x VIP points on specific sets (to be confirmed) in stores only. Double VIP points works out to 10% cash back in points to spend on more LEGO (or exclusive rewards), while 5x VIP points is a whopping 25% cash back.

That makes this the best time to pick up those LEGO Star Wars sets unavailable anywhere else, or rarely on sale (scroll down for more on those), but it’s also a welcome bonus for any other purchases, too. If you haven’t yet signed up to the LEGO Group’s loyalty program, click here to find out how to become a VIP member. (It’s free!)

Exclusive LEGO Star Wars sets

Some LEGO Star Wars sets are only available directly through official channels, or a single third-party retailer. Discounts on those products are usually pretty tough to come by, so making the most of double VIP points events and gifts-with-purchase at LEGO.com is often the best way to extract maximum value for money.

That makes May the 4th the perfect time to buy any of those sets you’ve had your eye on – but are rarely discounted elsewhere. We’re talking heavy hitters like 75313 AT-AT, 75331 The Razor Crest and 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder, but also smaller hard-to-find sets such as 75342 Republic Fighter Tank, 75338 Ambush on Ferrix and 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama.

Also exclusive from May 1 is 75355 X-wing Starfighter, the latest UCS set. It will qualify straight away for all three gifts-with-purchase, and a 10% return on a brand new set (in the form of VIP points) is nothing to sniff at. We likely won’t see any discounts on this one for a good while, so it’s that rare moment when buying a set day one actually offers the best value for money.

For more on this year’s LEGO Star Wars Day offers across all retailers, keep an eye on our dedicated May the 4th deals page.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
