Jon Favreau confirms more details on Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett

The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau has shed a little more light on the newly-revealed Star Wars spin-off The Book of Boba Fett.

Disney recently announced an eye-watering number of Star Wars shows coming to its streaming platform over the next few years, with the very noticeable omission of Boba Fett – despite the bounty hunter’s reappearance in the second season of The Mandalorian.

But then the title credits rolled on the show’s dramatic finale in Chapter 16: The Rescue, and a very familiar face popped up on screen. In the sequence that followed, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand strolled into Jabba’s Palace, shot up a gluttonous Bib Fortuna and seized the vacant throne. And then a title card dropped the news: The Book of Boba Fett, coming December 2021.

With no other details to go on, Star Wars fans have been left scrambling for answers in the days since. Is it a new spin-off? Will it replace The Mandalorian’s third season, given they’re seemingly set to arrive on Disney+ simultaneously?

Speaking on Good Morning America (GMA), Favreau has now revealed that The Book of Boba Fett will in fact stand independently of The Mandalorian.

“We wanted to hold this back because we didn’t want to spoil the surprise during the big Disney announcement of all the shows… and so they let me keep this one a secret,” the showrunner said. “This is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3.”

Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett) and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand) will both star in The Book of Boba Fett, while Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez – director of The Mandalorian’s visceral Chapter 14: The Tragedy – will executive produce.

Given Favreau and Filoni are both involved in both shows, though, they probably won’t arrive simultaneously after all. Favreau clarified on GMA: “What we didn’t say in that announcement is that the next show coming up… is going to be The Book of Boba Fett, and then we go into production after that with Season 3 of The Mandalorian, with the main character that we all have known and loved.”

That said, we hopefully won’t have too long to wait, as The Mandalorian’s third season is apparently in pre-production right now, alongside production on The Book of Boba Fett. That show takes the total number of Disney+ Star Wars projects up to 11, with four – The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic – all set within the same general timeline.

We’ll have to wait and see whether any of these spin-off shows translate into LEGO sets, but as we’ve already had a few models for The Mandalorian – including the upcoming 75299 Trouble on Tatooine – it’s safe to assume we’ll see at least one or two from the most popular shows.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
